CJA Common Errors
1. Vouchers must be submitted within 45 days of final disposition of the case in District Court. You may submit time through the filing of the notice of appeal. If a court appointed attorney has been substituted in the case, you must wait until the disposition of the case and all vouchers must be submitted by each attorney before any voucher can be paid.

2. Incorrect mileage rates.  Check current rates.

3. Itemization of expenses: all expenses and travel must be itemized.
4. Expenses in excess of $50 must be accompanied with a receipt.
5. Reporting of hours: all hours must be reported in hours and tenths of an hour (i.e. 1.8, not 1.75).
6. Miscalculations: be sure to check your calculations before submitting your voucher.
7. When submitting a CJA 20 voucher for services in excess of the statutory maximum (statutory maximums are posted on our website), you must also complete the CJA 26 form.
8. Prior authorization of vouchers for expert services over $500: you must get any services over $500 authorized prior to submitting the CJA 21 voucher.
9. When submitting a CJA 21 for expert services, make sure the provider has provided his/her social security number or tax identification number.
10. All time must be itemized under the appropriate subsection for in-court and out of court time.
